The Golden Era
Newport Surf & Sport opened its doors in 1976, when a local family turned a small Newport Beach storefront into one of the coast’s first true ‘Surf & Sport’ shops. Long before surf went mainstream, the shop was backing upstart brands like Quiksilver and building a loyal crew of locals who lived in the water. By the late ’80s, Newport Surf & Sport had grown into a 5,000-square-foot institution and took home the 1987 Marty Award for outstanding West Coast menswear retail, going head-to-head with national chains as a family-owned original.
